Only certain transitions are allowed by quantum mechanics.  Transitions are only allowed if Dn > 0, Dl = 1, and DJ = 0 or 1.

For example, the L_II to K transition is allowed.  Special names are assigned to the x-ray wavelengths arising from allowed transitions.  This transition is given the designation Ka₂.
